Billion Electric and Billion Watts, a part of the Billion Group, offer a new MIT choice for solar energy, energy storage, and EV charging stations, with guaranteed maintenance and operational services.
Following the energy transition, the installation capacity of solar and wind power continues to rise year after year. Midday solar power generation has been consistently breaking new records, and the share of green energy can exceed 30%. However, since solar and wind energy are intermittent sources, energy storage systems play a crucial role in power dispatch and stabilizing the grid supply. Their importance is growing rapidly.
With the rising electricity prices in April, industrial electricity rates will see significant increases, while residential, small business, and low-voltage electricity rates will also be fully adjusted. How can we achieve energy savings, sustainability, and reduce costs? Billion Watts brings a diverse range of new Taiwan-made MIT products, including industrial and commercial energy storage systems and solar inverters, offering comprehensive green energy services and providing solutions for businesses and individuals to save on electricity costs.
The widening gap between peak and off-peak electricity prices creates additional revenue opportunities through demand response.
In addition to its critical role on the grid, energy storage has numerous applications on the consumer side as well. According to Sam Chen, Director of Business at Billion Watts’ Solar Energy Division, energy storage trends in Taiwan are shifting. While previously focused on the grid-side services such as Taipower’s ancillary frequency regulation (dReg), energy shifting with frequency regulation (E-dReg), and combined solar and storage on the generation side, the trend is now moving toward behind-the-meter applications. Billion Watts is well-prepared for this future development, with plans to introduce more efficient behind-the-meter energy storage solutions.
Enterprises today face not only rising electricity prices but also issues such as achieving net-zero carbon emissions and the potential imposition of carbon taxes. These factors are accelerating the incentive to invest in energy storage solutions. In October 2023, Billion Watts introduced an all-in-one industrial and commercial energy storage solution. From battery modules to cabinets and container assembly, all components are manufactured and assembled locally in Taiwan. This local approach offers distinct advantages in after-sales maintenance and battery inspections, ensuring swift service and support. With electricity prices anticipated to rise further, and an increasing gap between peak and off-peak rates, companies that adopt energy storage solutions can replace traditional diesel generators and even participate in Taipower's demand response programs, creating additional revenue streams for factories.
The Billion Watts team estimates that energy storage will become one of the key options for major electricity consumers. In the future, the threshold for identifying major electricity consumers is expected to lower, with contract capacity requirements reducing from 5,000 kW to 2,000 kW, and eventually to 800 kW. As the rate differential grows, the conditions for deploying behind-the-meter energy storage systems will also increase. Taiwan's safety and fire standards for energy storage are expected to be fully developed this year, and the decreasing costs of lithium iron phosphate batteries will further promote energy storage adoption—a trend closely monitored by the Billion Watts team.
Elaine Chen, Vice General Manager of Billion Watts, highlighted the flexible power and capacity configuration options available in their industrial and commercial energy storage systems. These systems can be tailored to different spatial requirements with containerized, outdoor liquid-cooled, and indoor air-cooled cabinets, all designed to suit the designated site. They have also passed IEC 62619 and UL 9540A thermal runaway propagation tests. Chen noted that the system monitors each battery module’s cell temperature and voltage, preventing risks like overcharging or over-discharging and safeguarding critical factory assets from fire hazards. Currently, the demand for Billion Watts' industrial and commercial energy storage solutions spans diverse sectors among major electricity consumers, including manufacturers in the textile, steel, cement, electronics, and pharmaceutical industries. Energy storage needs range from several hundred kW to MW-scale deployments.
The all-encompassing MIT (Made-in-Taiwan) standard for Billion Watts' industrial and commercial energy storage solutions offers significant advantages. As the energy subsidiary of Billion Electric Group, Billion Watts is dedicated to providing a full range of solar and energy storage solutions. Billion Electric, founded in 1973, brings decades of experience in power electronics and telecommunications. With locally sourced system components, there's no need for reliance on imported equipment. According to Sam Chen, Taiwan will continue to advance toward microgrids and regional grids, where Taiwanese-made solutions are prioritized as essential criteria.
Billion Watts is actively engaged in promoting microgrid solutions, offering distributed power sources and energy storage systems with controlled charge-discharge capabilities. This ensures a smooth solar energy output and maintains adequate power levels, guaranteeing system stability. Additionally, their solar PV, energy storage, and diesel generator systems can be interconnected for reliable electricity supply, supporting basic energy needs while reducing utility expenses.
Billion Group has launched its latest self-developed, Taiwan-manufactured BNI SERIES string inverters, available in two models: 40–60kW and 100–125kW. Both models have achieved National Standards Voluntary Product Certification (VPC) and are set for shipment this year, aiming to support government tenders, large-scale solar power stations, and Fishery and electricity symbiosis projects. The first batch, with a capacity of 8MW, will be installed as part of a government-led project on livestock farms. Billion Watts, a subsidiary of Billion Group, emphasizes that inverter quality directly impacts system output, with reliability contingent on rigorous quality control. Through strategic partnerships with major international brands, Billion Watts has secured cutting-edge technology and superior materials, reinforcing its strengths in Taiwan-based manufacturing, competitive pricing, and comprehensive after-sales service—positioning the company for success in the market.
In 2021, Billion Watts ventured into the energy storage sector, achieving an impressive market share exceeding 10% in Taipower’s Frequency Regulation Reserve Auxiliary Services. The company has since facilitated over 20 successful grid-scale energy storage integrations across Taiwan, with these systems actively trading on the grid. Billion Watts’ proprietary Pixel View intelligent cloud monitoring system has received DREAMS certification for both hardware and software, surpassing 500MW in shipment volume—demonstrating its leadership in ICT technology and integrated power system solutions. In the solar sector, Billion Watts has also excelled, with agency-installed solar inverter capacity reaching 300MW, supporting over 1,500 photovoltaic sites across Taiwan. Additionally, Billion EVC, another arm of Billion Group, is advancing vehicle electrification in Taiwan, providing community-level, self-developed BH-2000 EV charging systems. These systems integrate solar and energy storage, allowing residential homes to transform into green buildings.
On March 21, Billion Watts will host an event at the Sheraton Taoyuan Hotel titled “Smart Energy Transformation in Industry and Commerce: Driving Stable, Low-Carbon Power Supply.” Partnering with EY Advisory, TSTI Tatung World Technology, and NextDrive, Billion Watts will present an ecosystem solution combining solar, energy storage, and EV charging stations to help companies achieve green energy production and meet carbon reduction goals.
